Gunner, who is from Nancy's 2000 litter, is absolutely and completely a great dog. I did in fact hunt him that first year as an eight month old puppy, and he did very well. I have done all of his training myself, and he has turned out to be a fantastic hunting dog. Gunner, now in his second hunting season, retrieved over two hundred birds this fall, and we only lost one bird the entire season.
Gunner is a fantastic and fast swimmer. He made multiple retrieves on cripples this year that were over two hundred yards, he has no fear of the cold, and will jump into Icy water as fast as a Chessie. I am surprised at both his patience (with other dogs), and his speed. On almost every hunt he would out retrieve the other dogs by as much as two birds to one. The most absolutely phenomenal part about him though is his temperament. When we are hunting he sits still, does not whine, does not jump or run around, he just sits perfectly still on his seat, (yes he has his own seat in the new boat).
I am absolutely tickled with Gunner. He stays indoors at all times with us, and he gets along just fine with the new baby. She is now 6 and 1/2 months old and is starting to grab him and pet him. If he will be the dog he has been this year for the rest of his life, then I believe I will have been fortunate to have had one of the greatest hunting dogs ever.
If you are buying a (Kitty and Elwood) puppy, you can't
go wrong.
